Blog entry - March 23, 2025

When I was nine my dad passed away. It was close to an epic ice storm in Rochester in 1991. I remember being at home with my brother and uncle when my mom and aunt were visiting my dad in the hospital. When they came home - they shared the news with me.

I don't remember what I felt when they shared the story - as a parent now - I am not sure how my mom had the strenght to tell me. There have been years on March 23, were I am in a shell. This year I wanted to share some pictures of my family and celebrate the life I have with them.

2 of my 3 kids are older than I was, when my dad passed. I am so lucky to have them and my wife Alison in my life.

I am glad I found some time today to write about this - it helps me see how much life changes and that you never really know how much time you have to enjoy the people you love.

Because of some of these feelings and a need to be closer to family - we will be moving back to New York this summer.

It will be challenging and there are definitely some unknowns - but to be around family again and watch my own children grow in the town I was born and raised will feel really special.

Third entry of the Month!

My new years resolution is to blog more - and I am happy this is my third entry since December 20th. Technically not all in the month of January - but who is really keeping track of this than me?

This time of year can feel bleak for many. Shorter days, colder nights, the excitement of the holidays wane and the earth won't be reborn until March at the earliest. But - even with the challenges of winter - there is much to relish and enjoy at this time of year. For one, I prefer the cold to the relentless heat and humidity of the summer months. I enjoy warm drinks and dishes. I love bundling up and feeling the cold air on my ears and the crisp air on my cheeks, while my body is warmed by coats and vests and sweaters.

I miss the elongated winters months of upstate New York - because they always made me appreciate summer more. For now I will bask in the glow of gray skies, breezy afternoons, and cold mornings sipping coffee and wanting to be warmer. They will not be here for long.

First entry of 2025!

So the new year has come and as most folks - the turning of the calendar page from December of last year to January of a new year is symbol of rebirth and newness.

This year I am excited to see the new year with lenses of clarity. As I mature ( aka get older) my world view is becoming more localized. It is not that I am not a dreamer anymore - I still am and probably always will be - but how my local environment is impacted and how it impacts me and my family is becoming more important.

So this year I hope to continue to grow and see the world around me in a localized way.

My Blog

I am old enough to remember when blogs were new. That is the fun thing about getting older - what used to be cool is coming back in style - its like how my parents felt about bell bottoms when kids started wearing them again in the 90s.

This year my resolution is to blog once per week - hopefully I keep up with it. May be about work, about parenting, some new recipe, who knows. But I am going to use this space to have an outlet that is apart from social media.

- Best,

AJ
